Smashing Patty Melts Sauce (Printable Version)

Juicy beef, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and rye blended in a golden, savory sandwich.

# What You'll Need:

→ Main Ingredients

01 - 1 tablespoon olive oil
02 - 2 cups thinly sliced onions
03 - 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
04 - 680 grams lean ground beef
05 - 1 tablespoon ketchup
06 - Worcestershire sauce, to taste
07 - 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
08 - Kosher salt, to taste
09 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
10 - 8 slices rye bread
11 - 225 grams Swiss cheese, sliced

# Steps To Follow:

01 - Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions, season with kosher salt and black pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes until the onions are golden and soft. Set aside.
02 - In a large bowl, combine lean ground beef, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just incorporated. Divide and form the mixture into 4 patties slightly larger than the bread slices.
03 - Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside.
04 - Wipe the skillet clean and melt the remaining unsalted butter over medium heat. Place 4 slices of rye bread on a clean surface. Top each with one cooked patty, a portion of caramelized onions, and 2 slices of Swiss cheese. Cover each with a second slice of bread.
05 - Place assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Grill for 2 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is crisp and the cheese has melted.

# Notes and Tips:

01 - For optimal caramelized onions, cook them slowly and avoid high heat to prevent burning.
